Our drawing of Google’s comparison of Business editions and its Gemini app pages, and of Anthropic’s help centre, read on 1 November 2026. Claude’s connectors find Docs, Sheets and Slides through Drive and can edit them live beside the chat.
For a business that runs on Google Workspace, Gemini comes with the subscription: inside Gmail on every Business edition, and from Business Standard inside Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Meet and Chat as well. Claude reaches the same Gmail, Calendar and Drive through connectors that follow each person’s Google permissions, and works inside Docs, Sheets and Slides through a sidebar that is still in beta. Which one fits depends on where your team does its work, what each assistant may change there, who switches it on in your Google Admin console, and which account your people sign in with.

What Gemini reaches in Workspace
Google builds Gemini into Workspace edition by edition. Every Business edition includes the Gemini app and Gemini in Gmail, where it drafts emails, suggests replies, summarises long threads and proofreads. From Business Standard, Gemini also works in the side panel of Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Meet and Chat: it drafts and summarises documents, works in spreadsheets, builds and edits slides, takes notes in meetings and summarises conversations. Google’s comparison of its Business editions, updated on 30 October 2026, lists none of these side panels for Business Starter.
The Gemini app can also work with your Workspace content, which administrators allow by default. It can find and summarise information in Gmail, Docs and Drive, and create and manage events in Google Calendar, as well as items in Tasks and Keep. Google lists the limits: the Gemini app does not see comments or images in Docs and Gmail or pictures and videos in Drive, and it cannot create folders or move files in Drive.
On 30 October, Google added whole-deck editing to Slides for Business Standard and Plus: one request can now restyle or rework an existing presentation. Our news page on Gemini editing the files it makes and whole decks in Slides covers it, with the change to files in the Gemini app made the day before.
What Claude reaches in Workspace
Claude reaches Workspace in two ways. The first is its connectors for Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive, which work from the Claude app on every Claude plan; on the Team and Enterprise plans an owner enables them for the organisation first. With them, Claude reads emails, events and Drive files, including Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDFs and Microsoft Office files, and it can act: send, reply to and forward emails, create, update and delete events, and share, move or trash files. Claude only reaches this data when someone asks a question or requests an action that needs it, and it mirrors each person’s Google permissions, so it cannot open anything their account cannot already open. From Claude on the web and on desktop, separate Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors also let Claude edit those files live in a pane beside the chat.
The second way is Claude for Google Workspace, a sidebar in Docs, Sheets and Slides that is in beta on the Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise plans. A person can install it from the Google Workspace Marketplace, or a super administrator can install it for everyone, for chosen groups or for organisational units. The sidebar works on the open file and on the content you select, and it does not see your other files, your email or your calendar unless you connect Drive inside it, which is off by default.
Some of the comparisons you will find online say that Claude has no Workspace integration. Anthropic’s help centre documents both of these routes, and the two can be used together: the connectors for work that starts in a conversation, the sidebar for work inside the file you have open.
Before anything changes
Day to day, the difference that matters most is what happens before an assistant changes something in your Workspace. Claude asks for approval before each action on Gmail, Calendar and Drive by default, and on the Team and Enterprise plans the owners decide whether members may let those actions run without asking. In its sidebar, Claude asks before it edits the open document by default, and its changes appear in the version history under your name.
Google documents the Slides side: Gemini applies its edits to the deck as if you had made them, shows a summary of what it changed and leaves undo and the version history to review or reverse them. The Gemini app can create and manage Calendar events, and the pages we read do not say whether it asks first. Where a vendor’s page says nothing, the table below says so instead of guessing.

Our drawing of the settings in Google’s Admin Help and Anthropic’s help centre, read on 1 November 2026. It is not the Admin console’s interface.
For Gemini, the edition each person is on decides which side panels they get, and an administrator with the Gemini Settings privilege decides two things in the Admin console: whether the Gemini app is on, for everyone, for an organisational unit or for a group, and whether it may use Workspace content from Gmail, Drive, Docs and Calendar. Both are on by default.
For Claude, a Google administrator marks Claude as a trusted app under API controls, which takes about 15 minutes to apply and covers every connector, the live editing of Docs, Sheets and Slides included. The sidebar is a separate install: a super administrator can install the sidebar for chosen groups or organisational units, and on the Claude side an owner of the Team or Enterprise plan enables the Gmail, Calendar and Drive connectors for the organisation before anyone can connect them.
The account decides the terms
For both products, the protections that cover what your people type depend on the account they use. Google treats the Gemini app as a core service in Business Starter, Standard and Plus: what people enter there is not reviewed by humans or used to train models outside your domain without permission. People in your domain whose licence does not qualify use the Gemini app under Google’s consumer terms, where chats may be reviewed by people.
Anthropic does not use the inputs or outputs of its commercial products, which include the Team and Enterprise plans, to train its models by default, and it does not train its models on data from the Gmail, Calendar and Drive connectors. Its consumer plans, Free, Pro and Max, are covered by a separate policy, and on a consumer plan with training switched on, content someone copies from a connector into a chat may be used.

In practice, a team that uses either assistant for client emails, quotes or staff records is better off doing it with business accounts on both sides. Our guide to adopting AI securely sets out how we decide which data an assistant may see.
The questions that decide it
No verdict fits every business. These are the questions we would ask you before recommending one, the other or both.
Which edition is each person on? Business Starter puts Gemini in Gmail and the Gemini app; Standard and Plus add Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Meet and Chat.
Where does your team spend its day: inside Gmail, Docs and Sheets, or in a separate AI app where it keeps its projects and instructions?
Which tasks only need the AI to read and draft, and which need it to send, schedule or file something, and who approves those?
Do your shared drives and folders reflect who should see what? Claude mirrors each person’s Google permissions, so the folders people can open today are the ones it can search for them.
Who is your Google administrator, and can they make the settings each option needs in the Admin console?
Are your people on business accounts on both sides, or do some use a personal Google account or a consumer Claude plan for work?
Where we stand, and how we start
We work in Claude and set it up for the businesses we work with. When a team runs on Google Workspace, we start from what it already has: the edition each person is on, the Gemini settings in your Admin console, the Claude connectors and sidebar your administrator trusts, the permissions each person has, and the points where a person approves before anything is sent, moved or deleted.
