Our drawing, with a fictional request, of what Google announced on 29 October 2026. It is not the Gemini app’s interface.

On 29 and 30 October 2026, Google made two changes for businesses on Google Workspace. In the Gemini app, a document, spreadsheet, slide deck or PDF that Gemini generates now opens inside the chat, where you can edit it, ask about a passage or have Gemini rework it before it goes to Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive or a download. In Google Slides, Gemini can now edit an entire existing presentation from one request. Neither change has an administrator setting of its own, so what decides who gets them is your Workspace edition and the Gemini app setting itself.

What Google announced

Google published both changes on its Workspace Updates blog. The first, on 29 October, concerns the Gemini app at gemini.google.com: the files Gemini generates can now be previewed and edited inside the conversation. The second, on 30 October, concerns Gemini in Google Slides: one request can now change several slides or a whole presentation, and Gemini decides which slides need the change.

Both extend features that arrived earlier this year. Since 27 April, the Gemini app could turn a request into a file, one file per request, in formats that range from Google Docs and Sheets to PDF, Word, Excel and Markdown, ready to download or open elsewhere. Since 30 June, Gemini in Slides could build a new deck from one request, using files from Drive as its material and another deck as its style. The October changes add the editing step: inside the chat for generated files, and across a whole existing deck in Slides.

The Gemini app now opens the file it makes

When someone asks the Gemini app for a file, the file now appears in the conversation. They can expand it to full screen and type their changes, highlight a passage to ask Gemini a question about it, or ask Gemini to rework it, for example to change the tone or the structure of a slide deck before opening it in Google Slides or downloading it as a PPTX or a PDF.

Google describes three typical uses. A slide deck can be outlined and drafted in the chat, then opened in Slides or downloaded. A tracker, a table or a simple data model can be generated in a spreadsheet, checked in the preview and opened in Google Sheets. A document can be drafted as a Google Doc, a PDF, a LaTeX or Markdown file or plain text, edited in place and uploaded to Drive.

PDFs can be previewed and edited on the web and on mobile; every other format only on the web. The feature works in every language the Gemini app supports, and Google lists it for all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and personal Google accounts. For a team, it means the first version of a weekly report, a site visit tracker or a client proposal can be shaped in the same conversation where it was requested, before anyone opens Docs or Sheets.

Gemini in Slides now edits the whole deck

In Google Slides, Gemini works in a side panel next to the deck. From one request, it can now update content across the presentation, refresh its visual style, match the style of another deck, combine slides or add new ones. Gemini works out which slides need to change and applies its edits to the slides themselves, which stay normal, editable Google Slides. Content can be grounded in files you add from Drive.

Google’s examples include restyling a whole deck to match a reference file, adding detail from a document in Drive, condensing several slides into one, and giving every title the same size and colour. When Gemini has finished, a summary of its changes appears in the side panel. The edits are applied as if you had made them yourself, so undo and the version history let you review or reverse them.

Our drawing, with a fictional deck and request, of what Google announced on 30 October 2026. It is not the interface of Google Slides.

At launch it works in English only. Google started a gradual rollout on 29 October and says the feature may take more than 15 days to appear in every Workspace. Until at least 1 December 2026, Workspace customers get higher promotional limits for multi-slide work; per-person limits apply after that date, and Google says it will publish them on its help pages before they take effect.

Who gets what, and what your administrator controls

The two changes do not reach the same people. File preview and editing in the Gemini app is listed for every Google Workspace customer, Business Starter included. Whole-deck editing in Slides needs Business Standard or Business Plus, Enterprise Standard or Plus, or a personal Google AI Pro or Ultra plan. Google’s comparison of its Business editions, updated on 30 October, lists Gemini in Slides for Standard and Plus and not for Starter.

Google provides no administrator setting for either change. The Gemini app itself has one, and it is the setting Google points administrators to: in the Google Admin console, under Generative AI, then Gemini app, then Service status, a person with the Gemini Settings administrator privilege can turn the app on or off for everyone, for an organisational unit or for a configuration group. By default the app is available to licensed users over 18, and conversation history is on.

The account your people sign in with

Google treats the Gemini app differently depending on the account behind it. In Business Starter, Standard and Plus, the Gemini app is a core service with Workspace protections: what people enter is not reviewed by humans or used to train models outside your domain without permission. People in your domain whose licence does not include those protections use the Gemini app under Google’s consumer terms, where chats may be reviewed by people, and Google asks administrators to tell them not to enter confidential information.

Because the new file features also work with personal Google accounts, the account someone signs in with decides which terms cover the client list or the quote they paste into a request. A team that drafts proposals in the Gemini app is better off doing it with its Workspace accounts, which is the same advice we give for any AI tool in our guide to adopting AI securely.

What the announcements do not say

Four points remain open after reading Google’s posts and help pages.

  • The per-person limits after 1 December. Google says it will publish them on its help pages before they apply, and has not yet.
  • A separate switch. Neither feature can be turned off on its own; the controls an administrator has are the Gemini app setting and the edition each person is on.
  • Where a generated file is kept. Google writes that files can be uploaded to Drive or downloaded; it does not say that they are saved to Drive by themselves.
  • Other languages for whole-deck editing. It launches in English, with no date given for any other language.

How we start

We work in Claude, and when a team already runs on Google Workspace we start from what it has: which edition each person is on, whether the Gemini app is switched on and for whom, and which account people use for work. Our comparison of Gemini and Claude for a business on Google Workspace sets out what each one can reach and change in Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets and Slides, and who switches each one on.

Earlier Workspace changes are in our pages on Gmail’s AI Inbox for paid Workspace accounts and meeting recaps in Google Chat, and on the blog. You can also read who we are and how we handle security.
