On 2 October 2026 Anthropic announced Claude Frontier Academy, a training programme for the engineers who put Claude to work inside their own organisations. Its first programme is a residency that ends with a credential, and Anthropic aims to train 10,000 of these engineers by the end of 2027. This page sets out what was announced, who it is for, how the residency runs and how an organisation takes part, from Anthropic’s announcement.

What was announced

Anthropic presents the Academy as its answer to a shortage of people who can make AI work inside a real business. Its first programme is called the Frontier Deployed Engineer Residency. Anthropic says it is modelled on the way doctors are trained: engineers learn from practitioners, practise on realistic cases and are assessed on their work before they receive the credential. The stated goal is agentic systems that change how a business runs, from redesigned processes to new products and services.

Who it is for

The residency is for hands-on software engineers with strong fundamentals, a record of building with large language models, experience helping other people adopt AI, and a habit of taking on their business’s most important problems. Anthropic states that prior experience building AI agents is not required.

Engineers do not apply on their own. Their organisation nominates them, and each one arrives with a named Claude project that they will lead once they are back at work. The training is therefore tied from the start to a real piece of work inside the organisation that sent them.

How the residency runs

The programme starts with several days in person with Anthropic engineers and licensed instructors. The engineers work through a simulated deployment inside a large organisation, from choosing the right use case through the security review to the handover, and finish with a graded practical on a scenario they have not seen. Those who pass receive the Claude Resident Engineer badge.

They then move into a residency of twelve weeks, during which each engineer leads a real Claude use case at their own organisation, supported by Anthropic engineers and working alongside the rest of their cohort. They are assessed again at the end, and those who pass receive the Claude Frontier Deployed Engineer badge. Anthropic expects the first of these badges in early 2027.

The first cohorts

Anthropic says the first cohorts are already running, in San Francisco, New York and London, and that they include engineers from large consulting firms, banks and a pharmaceutical company, with a bank in Australia among them. London is the one cohort city outside the United States. The programme is to grow towards its goal of 10,000 engineers by the end of 2027.

Participation is by nomination. Anthropic’s page says that organisations can ask their Anthropic account team or their Partner Account Manager whether they are eligible. The Academy builds on the Claude Partner Network, where, according to Anthropic, professionals across 46,000 firms have earned more than 175,000 Claude certifications and nearly 4,000 people have completed Basecamp, an immersive programme based on the curriculum Anthropic’s own Applied AI teams follow when they join.

What the announcement does not cover

The announcement describes a programme for engineers sent by organisations that already have an Anthropic account team or a partner relationship. It does not say whether the Academy will open to engineers outside those organisations, to people who are not engineers, or to cohorts outside San Francisco, New York and London. Anthropic presents the residency as the first programme of the Academy and the first step of several, without saying what comes next.

For the training of a whole team on its everyday work, which is a different subject from the deployment engineers this programme trains, we explain our approach in AI adoption training for your team.

How we start

We set up Claude, or the AI environment a team already uses, for the businesses we work with. If you are working out how to put AI to work in your business and want to talk it through, the first step with us is a free AI pre-audit: 45 minutes on a call about how you and your team use AI today and which work to hand over first. You leave with a clear next step, with or without us.

How we help, who we are, how we handle security, and what an AI adoption consultant does. Also this week: Zapier, Make or n8n.
